[Infographic] How reducing the consumption of animal products benefits the environment

The infographic below from CulinarySchools shows the environmental impact of consuming meat and other animal products. While the issues are not as black and white as “meat is bad” and “plants are good”, the overall trend is that we need to reduce our meat consumption in order to avoid further environmental and health issues going into the future.

Here are some of the mind-boggling statistics from the infographic below:

  • Going vegan brings greater environmental benefits than buying a hybrid vehicle or eschewing showers for 6 months.
  • It takes 2,400 gallons (9,084 litres) of water to produce one pound of beef, but only 25 gallons (94 L) to produce a pound of wheat.
  • Raising animals for food uses 30 percent of the Earth’s land mass – or an area about the size of Asia.
  • 7 football fields of land are bulldozed every minute to create more room for farmed animals.


For regular meat eaters, try cutting out 1 red meat meal each week. By cutting out one 150g red meat meal a week you can save approximately 195kg of CO2 in a year.
